Fire + Ice Ultra — 250 km, Iceland’s toughest foot race Enter 2027
A week on and I am still buzzing from the experience. The course was not just spectacular but also very well marked, and the support team were all fun yet professional in ensuring our safety (if not comfort!) in the Highlands.

We showed up as strangers, but left as friends, united through the bond of suffering.

I’ll recommend the Fire and Ice to everyone. Especially those who hate their feet and feel the need to be punished. Legends, the lot of you.
Matt Spashett · 2026 finisher
I wanted to thank you all from the bottom of my heart — the technical and medical staff, and all the amazing runners with whom I had the honour of sharing this wonderful adventure.
Alexander Bertuccioli · 2026 finisher
It was my privilege to meet so many amazing, warm and special people. I cried leaving the restaurant. It felt like leaving family.
Michel · 2026 finisher
Massive thanks to the crew for an amazing job of looking after us.

Volunteering

Crew the race

Most of the volunteer crew from previous editions come back. Every year a small number of new places open — because the location and the terrain are every bit as stunning from the checkpoint as they are from the course.

/ Dates

Nine days, end of August

You need to be available to join the transport leaving Reykjavík on the Friday before the event, usually late morning, and depart Race HQ eight days later on the Sunday. For 2027 that is Friday 27 August to Sunday 5 September.

/ Roles

Course, camp, checkpoints, medical

Roles and the experience required vary — from marking and sweeping the course with the course team, to running a checkpoint, to the camp team who have the tents up before the first runner arrives. Tell us what you have done before.

/ Who

Often former competitors

Many of the crew have run the race. Experience of multi-day events, first aid, driving off-road, or simply being cheerful at 5am in the ash all count.

How to apply

Use the contact form and tell us a few lines about yourself: what you have crewed or raced before, any relevant qualifications (first aid, medical, driving), and confirmation that you are available for the full nine days. We reply to everyone, but new places are limited and are usually confirmed in the spring.
