Fire + Ice Ultra — 250 km, Iceland’s toughest foot race Enter 2027
A week on and I am still buzzing from the experience. The course was not just spectacular but also very well marked, and the support team were all fun yet professional in ensuring our safety (if not comfort!) in the Highlands.

We showed up as strangers, but left as friends, united through the bond of suffering.

I’ll recommend the Fire and Ice to everyone. Especially those who hate their feet and feel the need to be punished. Legends, the lot of you.
Matt Spashett · 2026 finisher
I wanted to thank you all from the bottom of my heart — the technical and medical staff, and all the amazing runners with whom I had the honour of sharing this wonderful adventure.
Alexander Bertuccioli · 2026 finisher
It was my privilege to meet so many amazing, warm and special people. I cried leaving the restaurant. It felt like leaving family.

The questions
everybody asks

Short answers here; the detail is one click further. If it is not covered, ask us.

Where does the race actually start?

Deep in central Iceland, more than 100 km from the nearest tarmac road, heading north towards the Arctic Circle. Race HQ is in Akureyri, in the north — not Reykjavík. You travel from Akureyri to Base Camp by road the day before. Course FAQs

Do I need to be able to navigate?

No. The entire course is marked with red flags and tape. Course FAQs

How cold does it get?

Below freezing at night, frequently. Snow, sunburn and sandstorms have all happened in the same race. The first stages stay high, at around 900 m. Weather

Are there river crossings?

Yes, several, up to thigh deep. The two largest are roped with crew in the water. Course FAQs

What do I have to carry?

Everything for six days except water: food (minimum 2,300 kcal a day), sleeping kit, clothing and the compulsory safety items. Packs weigh 6.5–12 kg. There is a kit check before the start and you cannot start without passing it. Kit FAQs and full list

What if I can’t finish a stage?

You can start the next day if you are fit to. Many people who retire help the crew at a checkpoint and stay part of the race. We cannot return you to Race HQ mid-week. Course FAQs

Is insurance really compulsory?

Yes, from the day you enter, covering medical treatment, evacuation, travel disruption and withdrawal for any reason. Medical treatment in Iceland is paid for at the point of care by non-residents. Compulsory insurance · Medical treatment in Iceland

How much does it cost and how do I pay?

£2,800 for 2027. A £700 deposit secures your place, £400 is due by 1 March 2027 and the balance by the end of June 2027. Instalments in £100 steps at any time. Entry starts by downloading the race pack; payment is then on runningadventureoutdoor.com. Event information

What if I have to pull out?

Before the 90-day mark you can transfer to a later year for a £50 admin fee, twice at most. After that it depends on what has been committed on your behalf. The deposit is non-refundable, which is what your insurance is for. Deferring or withdrawing

How do I get there?

Book with All-Iceland, the official travel partner since 2012. Most of the field does, and almost all the travel problems we see are from people who did not. Travel to Race HQ

Can friends and family come?

Yes — there is a package that takes them to the final camp, the finish and the celebration dinner. Friends and family

What do people get wrong?

Feet, new kit, being cold in camp, training only on road, and mindset. Top five mistakes · Race reports from past competitors
